Happy Valentine’s Day, fellow Roamers!
it’s February, the month of love and yesterday, I came across a meme that read, “Valentine’s Day is for girls under 22. If you’re 22 and older, sit down, mam—International Women’s Day is just a few months away.” I laughed until tears streamed down my face, not just because it was hilarious, but because there was a truth in its irony.
I remember Valentine’s Day as a kid—the excitement at school, pleading with my mom for the perfect valentine gift, and participating in those school modelling competitions. Fun fact: in Grade 6, I won my primary school Valentine’s Day modelling contest! As I grew older, the giddiness faded, until I met my husband.
Our love story is my absolute favorite. We met on Tinder on a random January evening at the Piano Bar in Greenpoint—conveniently located right opposite where I worked. The venue had a rooftop pool with breathtaking city views that immediately set the tone for our first connection. We chatted for weeks and then celebrated our second date on Valentine’s Day. Anton invited me over to his place, where he prepared a dinner that became one of the most intimate, yet purely sensual evenings of my life. It wasn’t overtly sexual, but it was filled with love, gentle nerves, and pure comfort— absolutely nothing fancy, but indeed, my definition of a fairytale moment.
That unforgettable night changed everything. Within our next date, we became a couple, and a year later, just one week before Valentine’s Day, we were married.
Our anniversary now marks a cherished tradition: every year around this time we escape on a little romantic getaway. This year was the first that we’re actually home with absolutely no plans. We recently relocated provinces and life has just been wilding since then, so getaways have been placed on pause for now.
